Dear All,
I am facing a problem with Internet.
Let me explain my setup. I have Windows 2003 Server with AD,DHCP,DNS & Exchange Server and two workstation. Everythig work's fine i am able to browse internet from my server and from workdstation.
But after a week i am not able to browse internet from any where. So i have to re-boot the server and then i am able to browse the internet.
Mean while i was checking my Event log and i found Event Id 12517 & 12503.
Event Id 12503
The WinHTTP Web Proxy Auto-Discovery Service has been idle for 15 minutes, it will be shut down.
Event Id 12517
The WinHTTP Web Proxy Auto-Discovery Service suspended operation.
Can anyone help me on this. why this is happening.
Please let me know if you need any information.
Thanks In advance
Shri !!
Hi Shri,
I do not believe that the errors in your event logs are related to the internet problems you are having.
The events 12503 & 12517 are very common and can be eliminated by disabling the WinHTTP Web Proxy Auto-Discovery Service. It generally is not needed.
I would start by trying to disable this service. Then one of 3 things will happen:
1. Everything will work fine and you will have no more internet problems.
2. Internet won't work at all. If this happens then I will need to know more about how your network is set up to find out why.
3. Everything will work, but you will still have intermittent internet failures. If this happens then that will prove that those errors are unrelated to the problem. I will need to know more about how your network is configured to help solve the problem.
Please let me know how it all works out.

2. Linkysys wireless Router

Hi Shri,
Sorry to hear that you are still having problems with your Internet. Did you get the same 12503 & 12517 errors in the event logs when the Internet stopped working this time? If you did then I would completely disable the WinHTTP Web Proxy Auto-Discovery Service (not just set to manual).
If you are not getting the errors then obviously the problem is coming from somewhere else, and I need to know more about your network and the details of the problem. When you lose Internet access on the server do you also lose Internet access on the laptop and/or workstation? Are the workstations using the server for anything Internet related (ie. as a Default Gateway or DNS server)? Do you fix the problem by rebooting the server or do you reboot the Linksys router? What is the purpose of the 8 port hub? You should be able to plug your server and workstations directly into the Linksys router. They usually come with a minimum of 4 ethernet ports.
Fill me in with as much detail as possible and I will do my best to try to find a solution for you.

Dear ED,
I am still getting same error in my event logs.
I am going to Disable that service and let see what happen.
I am not able to browse Internet from any where unless and untile i have to reboot the server.
On my server i have DNS,DHCP,AD & Exchange. I am getting IP address from DHCP to Labtop & wrorkstation. I have a static IP Adress for my srever.
Regarding Hub, I can remove that & plug all cable to my router.
Let me know if you want any information from me.
Thanks in advance.
Thanks
Shri !!
Only one more question right now. Do your laptop and workstation get their DHCP IP address from the server or from the Lynksys router? If they are getting their IP address from the server then you need to make sure DHCP is disabled on the router.
Let me know if disabling WinHTTP Web Proxy Auto-Discovery Service fixes the problem.

Nothing else that I can think of right now. Just let me know if the problem comes back now that you have disabled the service.

How is the cable modem connected to your network? I have seen ISPs in Australia configure the cable modem to recognise only 1 MAC address. If the cable modem is connected to the 8 port switch then during a reboot the cable modem can lock onto a different MAC address and you could lose Internet access. However, this all depends on how your ISP sets up their connections.
So, to eliminate this possibility, is the cable modem connected to the WAN port on the router? Is the router designed to work correctly with Cable Modems?

Question, are the work stations plugged in behind the server then the router. What I mean is my setup at my office is this router to server, server to hub. Server acts as the DHCP and the firewall. The router is just pass thou to allow the Cable to talk with the router. If your still having server issues I would consider moving the server off the network. Get dedicated server from Server Intellect (http://www.serverintellect.com). Then you eliminate the server and have the workstations connect to them across the net. Plus you will have 20 techs ready to fix your machine if it goes down and have monitoring services in places. Also Check your router, it might causing your problem too.
