I have been watching the SQL Server 2008 videos using Windows Media Player 11 inside of IE7. I hear the audio fine until the instructor switches from the presentation slides to the demonstration parts of the video or back. I can get the audio back by moving the progress slider. Any tips on resolving this?

I've heard of this issue coming up once before. I think it might have something to do with the DVD-ROM drive. I'm going to have you copy the training from the DVD on to your computer's hard drive. Just follow these steps:
1. Place the DVD in the PC
2. Open up My Computer
3. Right-click on the DVD and select Explore
4. Open up the folder Video01
5. Open up the folder Video01_media
6. Locate the file Video01.avi Right-click on that file and select copy
7. Open another My Computer page
8. Navigate to an area you can paste the AVI file to. Once selected, go to Edit and then Paste
Once the file has copied over, open it up from the there and let me know if the audio still skips.

I am sorry. I should have mentioned in my original post that I have already copied the DVD to my hard drive and I am playing the videos from the hard drive.

I also should have mentioned that the first few videos did not have this problem. I figured the problem started when some patch was installed on my system. Just now I went back to some previous videos to check. Turns out that the first few videos (Creating SQl Server 2008 Databases for example) do not have this problem. But the last few that I have watched (Performance for example) do.

Are the videos playing in IE or Windows Media Player?
Also, can you give me a time stamp of when this happens? I want to see if I can duplicate the error here.

The video is playing inside IE7 (I think using the Windows Media Player plugin).
In the Performance video, the audio stops at 4:02.

Ok, couldn't duplicate here. Have you tried opening the AVI files directly in Windows Media Player? I want to see if it's something with the video or IE.

I get the same results opening the AVI using Windows Media Player. I should also note that the Performance video is Video08.avi eventhough it is the 7th lesson in the table of contents.

Ok, well it sounds like it could've been a disc burn error. Send you order or ref # to eric@trainsignal.com and I'll ship out a replacement disc ASAP.

Same problem on my SQL Admin training disks. Strangely, I found that when the sound stops and if I set video back a few seconds, the sound magically returns.
This didnt' happen in the first few videos. It started in video 3 or 4, I think?
To recap: when the instructor switches from slides to desktop (or vice versa), the sound stops. If I set the video slider back a few seconds, the sound appears.
Computer <1 yr old, XP Pro, plenty of RAM, no known problems with our audio/video apps.

And you get the same issue if you copy the AVI from the DVD on to your PC?

Just being a sticky beak here, but have you installed any CODEC packs on your system? There was one I installed on my old XP setup (can't remember the name of the pack) but it did silly things with the sound.

My video sets do the same thing for the Windows 2008 Active Directory training videos as well.
I have copied the videos to my hard drive and use Window Media Player to play it. It only happens when the coach switches the presentation as mentioned above.
I have installed the lastest codecs too.

My work around is to use VLC Player but it does not look as nice as Windows Media Player b/c the video will look a little pink. But it is less annoying than the audio drop.

I have the same issue. Started with the 2008 AD DVD. Copied the DVD to the hard drive, same issue. I'm using Windows XP pro SP3 and IE8. I have also tried just running the AVI in Windows Media player and the experience is the same.

I have an issue with the audio on disc 1 of the 70-640 Windows 2008 Active Directory training. Starting on lesson 7 the audio will just drop off. The video will still play but without sound. If I scroll back just a bit the audio starts up again. This is what I have and what I have tried.
My Machine:
Windows XP Pro SP3
4GB Ram, 1TB hard drive, Core2 Duo 2.66
What I have done to try to correct the issue:
Run the Lesson from the DVD drive
Copy the DVD to the local drive
Copy the DVD to an external USB drive
All exhibit the same issue. As an example: in lesson 7 click on the “Configuring Local Group Policy” subheading. When Coach is leaving the slide to go to the Vista client (17:36) machine the audio just stops. This happens no matter how I access the AVI.

RT, I'm not able to duplicate this error on my end. Have you checked to see if this issue also occurs on another PC? I want to see if it's the disc or system settings.

Using the copy of the DVD I have on a USB drive on a different machine the issue is similar. the audio cuts out at the same point when coach switches from the slide to the video of the live machine.

It is obvious there are audio issues.
I have tried it on my laptop and desktop PC and have the same issues.
The workaround I found is to use VLC player. I got it to work perfectly with VLC Player now.
I just hope that Train Signal takes this thread seriously b/c it is not hard to experience this audio problem if you actually sit through the whole program. It is everywhere on my CDs.

Looks like I had a bad disk, Thanks to emunn and Train Signal for taking great care in resolving my issue!
