Best practice is to install exchange on a member server not a DC.

If this is a Production environment I would agree texasit. If this is for a practice or home environment then Exchange could be installed on the secondary DC. The one with the least FSMO Roles.

NOTE, once Exchange is installed on a DC you can NOT DCPROMO the Server or you will break Exchange. Also, if you install Exchange on a Member Server you can NOT DCPROMO the Member Server to a DC or again you will break Exchange.

As for MS best practise, they put Exchange onto a DC in SBS but it is slightly different.
