Ok so while I understand this for the most part there are a few things I am confused on and hopefully Ed or Coach can help me out on this.

QUESTION 1: Authoritative vs. Non-Authoritative restore

Let's just say I deleted an entire OU called Locations. Inside locations is yeah all the locations for where users live; say 200 users and 10 different OUs inside locations. Domain functional level is Server 2008 and I have 3 additional domain controllers that are global catalogs bringing a total to 4 DC/GC.

Here is where it gets confusing. BTW this is entirely made up; no moron could be this dumb to do this. Do I have to do a wbadmin start systemstaterecovery -version:????? to perform the non-authoritative restore or can I just go straight to the ntdsutil and perform an authoritative restore. (Replications took place)

I believe you could just skip the Non-Authoritative restore and just do the Authoritative. HOWEVER, what is microsoft looking for on their test? Also let's say they want you do do a non-authoritative would they want you to use the command line or the GUI for their sims?

QUESTION 2: I've seen on Microsoft's site where using ntdsutil they don't enter activate instance ntdsd. Is this truly required and if not their exam would they want you to type this in.

QUESTION 3: When performing Set DSRM Password I am then presented with Reset DSRM Administrator Password. When I go to type in the password I want I get an error "error parsing Input - Invalid Syntax

What am I doing incorrect

FINAL Question: Coach says to type. /administrator when going into directory restore mode....that user name never works. It will accept the default user name of administrator and the password that I set when running dcpromo. Yes I set a different password for the admin acct and directory restore

Yes, you can jump straight to the authoritative restore.

I believe you could just skip the Non-Authoritative restore and just do the Authoritative. HOWEVER, what is microsoft looking for on their test? Also let's say they want you do do a non-authoritative would they want you to use the command line or the GUI for their sims?

I can't really tell you exactly what the boys and girls at Microsoft expect on their exam. MCT non-disclosure and all that. But I can tell you that if you read the scenario carefully and just get the job done with whatever tools are available in the sim, whatever the task they set before you, you should be fine

QUESTION 2: I've seen on Microsoft's site where using ntdsutil they don't enter activate instance ntdsd. Is this truly required and if not their exam would they want you to type this in.

Yes, activate instance NTDS is required to do stuff on the AD. If you would try to perform actions on the AD database in ntdsutil without it, it gets angry and swears at you (ok, it won't really swear at you, but it will refuse to do anything).

QUESTION 3: When performing Set DSRM Password I am then presented with Reset DSRM Administrator Password. When I go to type in the password I want I get an error "error parsing Input - Invalid Syntax

Check out this post from MS: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc754363(WS.10).aspx
The syntax is the same in 2008.

FINAL Question: Coach says to type. /administrator when going into directory restore mode....that user name never works. It will accept the default user name of administrator and the password that I set when running dcpromo. Yes I set a different password for the admin acct and directory restore

You'll need to use the local administrator username (whatever you set it to, administrator by default) plus the DRSM password that you set in the dcpromo wizard. Check out this post: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc776568(WS.10).aspx

Hope this helps!
