Hey Ali, yes, learning SQL Server is a great next step. I myself have an MCDBA, and it has opened up multiple opportunities to me. But, not only will picking up SQL Server as a discipline make you more attractive in the job world, it will also greatly increase your understanding of stuff like the Active Directory database.

Once you understand database concepts, transferring those concepts to other applications like Microsoft Dynamics, PeopleSoft, and about a billion other database-driven applications is super-easy. Even working in web apps like Drupal, Joomla, and Wordpress becomes easier, as you'll have a deeper understanding of the process behind it.

My colleague Mel Haynes has built some SQL Server courses, and is working on building more. He's a great instructor, and I'd recommend that you jump right in with his courses.

Hello Ali:

Just chiming in on your post. Some of the concepts behind AD can be best explained via database design--specifically relational database (RD) design. The Active Directory (AD) database is a proprietary beast that you won't typically administer directly via SQL Server, but understanding RD can help a ton when trying to understand AD.

The full SQL 2008 developer course is in development right now. It is due out September 1. We have a FREE SQL 101 course that covers some of that. Depending on your focus you could do the current SQL 2008 Administration course or go the more developer route, hit the SQL101 course and later the upcoming SQL 2008 Development course.
