As if 21+ hours of Exchange 2007 Server training wasn't enough!

Now I'm working on a course that will cover backup and recovery in much greater depth: last time I covered it in a bit under 2 hours. This time I'm going to spend at least eight hours making it all totally clear.

Eight hours? What are you thinking? Did you get lazy the first time, or do you just like talking?

Neither. Shhh... This is actually a stealth course, flying low under the radar. At least four hours of the coverage will actually be focused on installing and configuring Microsoft's new backup product, Data Protection Manager.

Why would I do that? Well, Windows 2008 Server doesn't come with NTBackup, so the options for backing up Exchange 2007 on Server 2008 are pretty limited. A lot of people are going to be looking at DPM as their new backup solution, and it's pretty slick.

So you could think of this course as one on the DPM basics that also focuses heavily on backing up and restoring Exchange 2007 Server. But we'll be covering plenty of non-DPM topics.

Some topic previews?

- How to implement dial-tone recovery
- How to use the new Exchange VSS snap-in on Windows 2008 Server
- How to use multiple mailbox databases wisely
- Setting up DPM
- How to restore a mailbox database to a different server
- How to recover a server using DPM

And plenty more. Hope that whets your appetite.

Just a question on availability, is there a timeline for this product?

Most of this course is complete, but in order to finish it, I have to include coverage of a new VSS snap-in that Microsoft is providing to allow native backups of Exchange on Windows 2008. Currently, if you install Exchange 2007 on Windows 2008, there is no Exchange-aware backup available without a 3rd-party product or using DPM. In April Microsoft said they would release it in the summer, but they still haven't. Pestering them hasn't seemed to work either. Personally, I think it's a marketing decision, and they are trying to give their DPM more time to get a foothold in the market before offering another means of backing up Exchange. I see no technical reason for it, since they already released a similar (perhaps identical) snap-in for their SBS and EBS products.

All in all, my guess is that this course will be available in late December or early January.

I am working my way through Exchange 2007 and it is great. I had installed Exchange 2007 on a new Windows 2008 server and was I disappointed that NTBackup is not included in Windows 2008. Let me know as soon as the Advanced Backup and Recovery Couse for Exchange 2007 is ready. I need it now.

I recently recording the last video in this new course series. It's been almost a year since Microsoft said they'd release that VSS Snap-in for Exchange on Windows 2008, but it's still unavailable. We decided to go ahead and do the video without it, using the SBS-version of the snap-in to stand in for it.

I've demo'd a ton of stuff in this course, everything from setting up and using DPM, single mailbox recovery using Windows Server Backup, getting NTBackup to run on Windows 2008, remote streaming backups with NTBackup, full server recoveries, dial-tone scenarios, etc. I hope you all get a lot out of it. Sorry it took so long to put it in your hands!

The Exchange Server Backup and Recovery Training should be available in the middle of March!

Anyone who wants to be ready before the storm should check it out! I have personally learned a ton from this course.

This is great.:) I was looking for a little bit more on the Exchange 2007. I was particularly interested in the Clustering and High Availabilty. I see from the course Outline that you are covering it in one of the videos. I would like to know how detailed the coverage is? Do you expect to have the Windows Clustering setup and you pickup up on how Exchange is install in a cluster or do you go into the details of installing clustering on Windows? I am looking for very good detail on clustering Exchange 2007.

Thanks,
