Hello!

Thank you for contacting Train Signal's forums. One possible reason for poor sound quality is the version of wmp and IE which you are using. Please make sure that you are using the latest version of Windows Media Player (version 11) and that you have set your Internet Explorer to default and are using IE 7. Also, you should have all the updates completed on your computer to-date.

Please let us know if you continue to experience difficulty after trying the above.

but i think there must be other softwares that can play those codecs that needed in wmv file ??

or its only WM11 ..

There is a way to install Windows Media Player 11 on a Server 2003 system. I will list these steps in this post. However, if you want to try Windows Media Player 10 you should be able to correctly view most, if not all of our videos.

Installing Windows Media Player 11 on a Server 2003 system:

1) Download the Windows Media Player 11 setup file from here (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/info.aspx?na=90&p=&SrcDisplayLang=en&SrcCategoryId=&SrcFamilyId=1d224714-e238-4e45-8668-5166114010ca&u=http%3a%2f%2fdownload.microsoft.com%2fdownload%2 f0%2f9%2f5%2f0953e553-3bb6-44b1-8973-106f1b7e5049%2fwmp11-windowsxp-x86-enu.exe) and save to disk.
2) Run the setup file - The first thing you should see is a validation checker. Just leave this up, don’t go any further.
3) Search the hard drive for “wmp11.exe” - it should be in a temporary directory somewhere. Right click the file in the search then click “Open containing folder” (and not open).
4) Open and run the wmfdist11.exe file, then umdf.exe and wmdbexport.exe. Be warned, you may need to run these files in Compatibilty Mode. Simply right click each file, click Properties. Go to the Compatibility tab, then ensure that Windows XP is selected.
5) After all these are installed, you must restart (very important.)
6) Once you’ve restarted, run the wmp11.exe file in the same directory - this also may require compatibility settings being applied to it. Restart once more.
7) Back into Windows again, go to Start, Run then type in wmplayer then OK. Configure as you like.

The fact that you are getting clear video but cruddy audio makes me wonder if your audio settings or speakers/head phones are the problem. Have you had success with other recent audio situations on that computer?

I have tested the steps to install WMP 11 on a Server 2003 system and was successful. I also tested Winamp by playing some of our videos and was able to see and hear them perfectly. It is possible that the disc you have may have caused a bad burn or may have a bit of a defect. We could always try to get you a new copy of the course to see if this remedies the situation.

I have the same issues others are experiencing with Windows Server 2003. I use 2003 as a laptop OS for my day-to-day administration. The VMware ESX audio is real tin-canny or robot like. I haven't tried the WMP 11 install per the suggestion of Zach, but I know the audio doesn't correct itself in VLC Media Player either. Now, we use VOIP Softphone's and I know the software enables and disables certain audio codecs. So I simply enabled all codecs with the same result.

I will post if the WMP 11 installation works as I am looking to resolve this issue as I am traveling soon and would like to finish the training during my flight(s).

** WMP11 fixes the issue on 2003 Server **
